Spare a thought for the poor chap who stumbles across your website and avoid him spending twenty minutes downloading what turns out to be your collection of yoghurt pot labels (I'm not saying it's boring, just warn him first!).
The two main file formats are gif and jpeg. Gif files should ideally be replaced by the format png (for copyright reasons) but it's not a very reliable format and you're not really concerned by the patent pending on gif so don't worry about it.
- GIF : this format is limited to 256 colors, so forget about using photos and plump for drawings, logos, and images without too much color. It's the ideal format for anything other than photos, the file size is modest, which facilitates rapid downloading on your website. This format also exists as an animated version in order to make your drawings come alive and it also works well with transparent images.
- JPG : the format jpeg should be used for photos. Don't forget to make two versions of your photos, a small one to use as a teaser for your visitor, and a bigger one should he feel the need to examine more detail the strawberry yoghurt label :-).
